Sheriff Guy Trident doesn't have much to do with off-worlders; he has his hands full keeping his own planet safe. But he'll do anything, go anywhere to save Jewel Quinn. She broke his heart years ago when she left to marry a Terraloft aristocrat. Now she's run away from her husband, only to fall into the clutches of slavers.

Posing as a wealthy playboy, Guy arrives at Zuthuru Station to learn he's too late Jewel's memories have been erased. She's been tipped in silver, a process that leaves nothing behind except her body, sexually bound to pleasuring her master. Unwilling to give up hope, Guy buys her.

Jewel fights to reclaim herself, recalling a different connection to the handsome sheriff, remembering the frightened eyes of a young boy and the events that made her run. Together she and Guy search for her cure, plan her son's rescue from her ruthless ex, and test if they have any kind of future...before the past catches up to them.

I initially overlooked this story because the idea of a sex slave didn't really sit well with me. Also, I'm finding that I'm not a big fan of the amnesia storyline. But, after having read Jaq's Harp, I wanted to give the author another try. Although I thought Jaq's Harp was only a 3 star read, I thought it was highly imaginative just too short to really do it justice. Ms. Drake abounds in creativity, which shines through in this story.

Jewel Quinn is attempting to flee from her husband with their 4 year-old son. Halfway to her home planet, where her father is expecting her, she is caught by her husband's thugs. Her husband, Kalon, decides to have her silver-tipped--a process where her memory is wiped clean and her body is programmed to sexually please her master and only her master. When Jewel doesn't show up, Jewel's father goes to the one person he knows can help: Sheriff Guy Trident. Guy has loved Jewel forever. It broke his heart when she broke her promise to marry him to marry a rich aristocrat her parents arranged for her to marry. Now, Guy is off to find and rescue Jewel. When he finds her, she is in the middle of the silver-tipping processes, which means her memory is already gone and she is primed for her new master to claim her. Guy quickly claims her in hopes of having the process reversed. Soon, Guy and Jewel are racing across the galaxy escaping her ex-husband and finding a way to retrieve Jewel's memory and freedom.

Once I got over the "sex slave" bit, I found SILVER BOUND to be a highly engrossing read. We are given tidbits of Guy and Jewel's history through flashbacks at appropriate times, which filled in all the gaps and fleshed out their characters. We get a glimpse of Jewel's true self as she tries to outrun her husbands hired thugs and as her panic sets in over the realization she's about to be silver-tipped. Once she's silver-tipped, she is appropriately boring and only doing what she's told and a slave to physical urges. Soon, she is pushing through the mental boundary attempting to remember what Guy says about their shared past. She became a complex, likeable, and believable character as the story progressed. Guy, what a guy! He's loved Jewel all his life and has found no substitute for her once she left. Even though he is a man of the law, he knows he will lie, steal, cheat for her, which he has done and continues to do to keep her safe. Even though he has Jewel's as his sex slave, he refuses to take advantage of her situation...to a point. He's our space cowboy complete with pistols.

The story twists and turns to the point you're not too sure how it's all going to go. Even with her memories back, will she return to her crime lord husband? Will they find a way to break her slavery? And if so, will they find a way to be together? Will they want to be together after all the heartache?

Although the ending was highly satisfying, especially with all that Jewel and Guy must overcome to be together, I thought how things ended with Kalon were a bit inconsistent with Kalon's personality. Even though they had obstacles galore, it almost seemed too easy with how things went with Kalon.

This story wasn't easy. It's like what Guy says about life: "Though, of all people, Guy understood how life twisted like a snake in hand. Slippery and determined to go its own path. And at times sneaky and full of venom."

And that's what made a story about space stations, other planets, and gun-toting sheriffs so believable.

Silver Bound (Audible Audio Edition) Ella Drake Janet Metzger Carina Press Books Reviews

About 50 pages into this book, I was pretty sure I didn't like it. The story centered on a woman named Jewel who was turned into a sex slave. She had been trying to escape her crime lord husband with their son, but he caught her. He had her memory erased --and had nanobots inserted into her, er, erogenous zones. Then the scientists were supposed to synch his DNA with the technology on her body to force her to respond to his urges. But Jewel's real true love, Guy, gets to her first. She's halfway through the procedure (called silvering), so he can't stop it, but he has her matched to his DNA first... because he knows he'll never abuse her. So now she's HIS sex slave until he finds a way to free her from the chains of the technology.

I'm glad I didn't give up on the book, because it did get better. My biggest complaints initially were that I couldn't make myself care about Jewel and the plot device of the silvering seemed heavy-handed. Well, as the book progressed and Jewel began to regain her personality, that helped me with my first issue. And once we got to the first real love scene, frankly nothing else mattered, because it was HOT. All the love scenes were hot. Big thumbs up there.

The setting was kind of futuristic-western... kind of reminiscent of Joss Whedon's "Firefly," but with hot sex. There was some terminology it took me a little while to completely assimilate, but it wasn't insurmountable. Overall, a short and fairly good read, though it took me a little while to make a connection. 3 1/2 stars.
